bbc.co.uk, oxfam.org.uk
and sky.com are all examples of domain
names.
A domain name identifies the location of a person, business or organisation on
the Internet.
Hidden behind a domain name is the actual location address called an IP Address.
The IP Address or 'Internet Protocol' is the numeric address that guides all
Internet traffic, such as e-mail
and website traffic, to its destination.
The actual IP Address on the internet for
the television company bbc.co.uk is 212.58.228.155.
You can see why it is easier for someone to remember bbc.co.uk than it is
to remember it's
IP Address of 212.58.228.155.
It's the job of a Domain Name Service (DNS)
to translate a domain name to an IP Address.

The two most common uses for domain names
are for Websites and Email Addresses...
Websites If you wanted to visit the BBC's website you would use some software on a computer
called an Internet
Browser.
Within the Internet Browser you will be given an Address Entry Window in which
you would type
the Address that
you want to go to, the
Domain Name. In this example you would type in "bbc.co.uk"
and press enter.
Your browser will consult a DNS for the IP Address of that domain and then
show you
that location, which in this example, would be the BBC website - bbc.co.uk.
Emails If you wanted to send an email to the BBC, you would use some software on a
computer called an Email
Programme.
Within the Email Programme you will be given an Email Address Entry Window in
which you
would type the Email Address of the person you
want the email sent to. In this example you'd type in
"test@bbc.co.uk" and then your message.
Your Email
Programme would then send your email to the
Email Server for the IP Address of bbc.co.uk and then when the BBC next asks its Email Programme to
go and check for any emails at its Email
Server, your email would be collected and delivered to them.

For Personal Use You may want to buy a Domain Name to use personally, for example you could buy
yourname.me.uk so your email address could
be more personal such as email@yourname.me.uk
instead of a free email address such as
joe.bloggs7628@free-space-for-you.co.uk
It also means that you could have your own website if you paid for some space
for your website to live at.
You could then get a website designed which showed your family and friends your
latest holiday photos or your family tree or anything you want other people to
read or see.
For a Business, a Group or Organisation Instead of having a free email address such as
my.business7628@free-space-for-you.co.uk
you could have a much more professional email address such as
enquiries@yourbusiness.co.uk.
You may also want to have a website of your own designed to show
customers/clients your products
or services, your contact details and other items like on-line ordering or form
filling.

Costs vary depending on the type of domain name package you want and the company
you buy from.
Prices start from as little as £6.00 for a single domain name for up to two
years, renewed every two years.
You can choose different domain name extensions for your domain name to end in
such as: yourname.co.uk or: .org.uk |
.me.uk | .com | .net
| .org | .us |
.biz | .info
The extensions represent different types of Domain Names and are
intended to
help identify the
different types of people, websites, businesses or organisations out their.
For example, domain names ending with .com should relate to commercial businesses in the U.S.A.
.co.uk should relate to commercial businesses in the U.K. and
.me.uk should relate to a personal domain name such as
joebloggs.me.uk in the
U.K.
With the popularity of domain extensions such as
.com,
lots of people bought and still buy
domain names with extensions that do not have any of the original relevance to
them personally or as a business but because they are popular around the world
in general.
Please Note: There are differing rules that apply to owning
.com's
and .co.uk's so you need to be careful what you
choose.
